How it started

When a real need sparks an idea

The Blue Sentinel concept was born from a simple conviction: technology only matters if it solves a concrete problem in the field.

In rail, wildlife collisions are a major challenge — for safety, service reliability and biodiversity alike. Despite existing devices, the need for a more effective, smarter solution, better matched to real-world use, became clear.

It was in this context that the idea for Blue Sentinel was born: anticipate rather than endure, prevent rather than repair.

Where two worlds met

In 2022, the Infrapôle Pays de la Loire (a regional engineering unit of SNCF Réseau, the French rail infrastructure manager) approached ElanCité for the first time.

On paper, an unlikely pairing: an industrial expert in road detection and prevention, facing a demanding, highly standardised and very specific rail environment.

Yet from the first exchanges, one thing stood out — the technologies differ, but the industrial logic is the same.

The ÉlanCité teams quickly immersed themselves in the technical constraints of the railway environment, understood the operational challenges, and developed an innovative solution with agility. This capacity for listening, adaptation, and collaboration quickly became the bedrock of the Blue Sentinel project.

We are proud to offer a concrete response to the delays and cancellations affecting countless trains, in France and worldwide. To meet that challenge, we draw on ElanCité's strengths, built over more than 20 years: a culture of innovation, agility, and industrial manufacturing capability. We are at the start of an exciting journey — one that combines purposeful innovation with meaningful impact.

A collaboration recognised in the field

Before considering a large-scale rollout, one key step came first: to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Blue Sentinel anti-collision device through field experimentation.
A strategic 18-month Proof of Concept was run on two high-risk sections between Oudon and Briollay (western France).

Key figures:

These results exceeded the initial objectives and confirmed the approach: a solution that is preventive, measurable and immediately operational.

Ready to scale

The success of this POC marks a turning point.

Blue Sentinel is no longer a concept: it is a proven solution, designed with and for the people on the ground.

This first experiment now paves the way for new deployments, on other networks and other infrastructure, with a clear ambition: to become the new standard in preventing collisions between trains and wildlife.

Blue Sentinel, a collective story

“Blue Sentinel is first and foremost a human and industrial adventure, founded on trust and listening. A story where innovation is not decreed, but built step by step, on the ground, with those who use it.”
